This Privacy Policy describes how Séance ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Séance mobile application ("App"). By using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Account Information

When you create an account, we collect information depending on the sign-in method you choose:

Sign In with Apple: We receive your Apple ID, name (if you choose to share it), and email address (which may be a private relay address if you choose to hide your email). We do not receive your Apple ID password.

Sign In with Google: We receive your Google account name, email address, and profile photo URL. We do not receive your Google account password.

Email/Password Registration: We collect your email address and a securely hashed version of your password.

Anonymous Access: If you use the App without creating an account, we assign a temporary anonymous identifier. No personal information is collected for anonymous users.

1.2 Chat and Usage Data

Chat Messages: We store the messages you send to and receive from AI philosopher characters. These messages are processed to generate responses and may be used to improve the conversational experience within your sessions.

Conversation History: We retain your conversation history so you can return to previous chats.

Usage Data: We collect general usage information such as features accessed, session duration, and interaction patterns to improve the App experience.

1.3 Payment Information

In-App Purchases: Credit top-ups are processed through Apple Pay, Google Pay, or the respective app store payment systems via RevenueCat. We do not collect, store, or have access to your credit card numbers, bank account details, or other financial information. RevenueCat and the app stores handle all payment processing.

Purchase History: We store records of credit purchases and usage to manage your account balance.

1.4 Device and Technical Data

We may automatically collect:

  • Device type, operating system version, and unique device identifiers
  • App version and crash/diagnostic logs
  • IP address (used for rate limiting and security purposes)

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide the Service: Deliver AI-generated philosopher conversations, manage your account, and maintain your credit balance.
  • Process AI Responses: Your chat messages are sent to third-party AI language model providers (see Section 4) to generate in-character philosopher responses. Messages are processed in real time and are not used to train third-party AI models.
  • Improve the App: Analyze usage patterns to fix bugs, improve features, and enhance the user experience.
  • Communicate with You: Send service-related notifications such as account changes or policy updates.
  • Ensure Security: Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and unauthorized access.

3. How We Store Your Information

  • Account and Chat Data: Stored in our database infrastructure hosted via Supabase (PostgreSQL). Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest.
  • Vector Embeddings: Philosopher knowledge used for contextual responses is stored in a Milvus vector database. Your personal messages are not permanently stored in the vector database.
  • Authentication Tokens: Managed by Supabase Auth. Tokens are stored securely on your device using platform-specific secure storage (iOS Keychain / Android Keystore).

4. Third-Party Service Providers

We use the following third-party services to operate the App:

Each third-party provider is governed by their own privacy policy. We encourage you to review their policies:

5. Data Retention

  • Account Data: Retained for as long as your account is active. Upon account deletion, we will delete your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.
  • Chat History: Retained for the lifetime of your account. You may delete individual conversations at any time from within the App.
  • Anonymous User Data: Anonymous session data is automatically purged after 90 days of inactivity.
  • Payment Records: Purchase records may be retained for up to 7 years for tax and legal compliance.

6. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

We may share your information only in the following circumstances:

  • Service Providers: With the third-party providers listed in Section 4, solely to operate the App.
  • Legal Requirements: If required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request.
  • Safety: To protect the rights, property, or safety of our users or the public.
  • Business Transfers: In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, in which case you will be notified.

7. Your Rights and Choices

7.1 All Users

Access and Portability: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.

Deletion: Request deletion of your account and associated data.

Correction: Request correction of inaccurate personal data.

Opt-Out of Analytics: Disable usage analytics from within the App settings.

7.2 European Economic Area (GDPR)

If you are in the EEA, you have additional rights including:

  • Right to restrict processing
  • Right to object to processing
  • Right to data portability
  • Right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority

Our legal basis for processing is: (a) performance of a contract (providing the service), (b) legitimate interests (improving the App and ensuring security), and (c) your consent (where applicable).

7.3 California Residents (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to:

  • Know what personal information is collected and how it is used
  • Request deletion of your personal information
  • Opt out of the sale of personal information (we do not sell personal information)
  • Non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights

8. Children's Privacy

The App is not intended for children under the age of 13 (or 16 in the EEA). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have collected information from a child, please contact us immediately and we will take steps to delete such information.

9. Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information, including encryption in transit and at rest, secure authentication, and regular security reviews. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy in the App and updating the "Last Updated" date. Your continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
